Directional droplet transport on switchable ratchets by mechanowetting

Abstract Materials with a mechanical response to an external stimulus are promising for application in miniaturized cargo and fluid manipulation microfluidic (lab-on-a-chip) systems microsystems general. One of the main challenges droplet microfluidics is precise control motion, existing technologies have drawbacks that can compromise contents. Here, we demonstrate how on–off switchable ratchet topography combined simple actuation strategy be exploited accurately manipulate mm-sized droplets. Because mechanowetting principle, three-phase line dynamically attaches these deforming ratchets, affecting displacement controlled matter. We show such topographies capable transporting droplets over surface stepwise fashion. calculate forces generated by using both theoretical description simulations, identify window applicability terms size relative sawtooth dimensions. Our results enable design wall manipulation.
